dark. wet. gone.

dark. wet. gone. is an interactive soundscape in which you blindly search for the ghosts of humanity in an institution abandoned due to rising sea levels. It was inspired by the Ontario Govt's Climate Change Impact Assessment Report on the projected disappearance of species due to climate change. It further explores concepts inspired by ‘Grounds of Media Culture’ from Geology of Media by Jussi Parikka, how one species’ ecological annihilation has the potential to be transformed by time and pressure to become precious resources extracted by future cultures. The project began as a linear exercise in audio soundscapes in Audacity, based on field recordings of student movement in the vast hallways at York University in 2025. Its evolution into an interactive experience was inspired by research into video games for blind gamers for an unrelated project.

Instructions:

1. This game must be played with headphones or directional speakers. 
2. Press the button or hit space to enter the game from the menu.
3. Press the button or hit space to dismiss the notice.
4. Navigation:
   1. Turn: Left/Right arrow key, click or press left right bottom of screen.
   2. Walk forwards: Up arrow key, click or press top of screen. 
   3. ESC will bring up the pause menu. 
5. The experience is completed when you hear the poem at the bottom of the ocean.
